چکیده

The saturation process of free-electron-laser oscillators (FEL's) in the warm-beam regime is examined, considering radiation-extraction efficiency and spectral width. The spectral width and conversion efficiency can be estimated in both highand low-gain regimes when the laser-oscillator mode population is sparse enough. Under certain conditions, which can be achieved in a relativistic FEL with a Fabry-Perot resonator, a superinhomogeneous-broadening saturation process is predicted in which a hill-heaping effect will accompany the hole burning in the gain curve. In an oscillator, the resonator modes will interact and tend to spread both the emission spectrum and the electronbeam distribution uniformly and over a wide region.

Proposal to generate an isolated monocycle x-ray pulse by counteracting the slippage effect in free-electron lasers.

A novel scheme is proposed to generate an isolated monocycle x-ray pulse in free-electron lasers, which is based on coherent emission from a chirped microbunch passing through a strongly tapered undulator. In this scheme, the pulse lengthening by optical slippage, being intrinsic to the lasing process of free-electron lasers, can be effectively suppressed through destructive interference of ele...

Lasing action in strongly coupled plasmonic nanocavity arrays.

Periodic dielectric structures are typically integrated with a planar waveguide to create photonic band-edge modes for feedback in one-dimensional distributed feedback lasers and two-dimensional photonic-crystal lasers. Although photonic band-edge lasers are widely used in optics and biological applications, drawbacks include low modulation speeds and diffraction-limited mode confinement. In co...

Optical frequency shot-noise suppression in electron beams: Three-dimensional analysis

A predicted effect of current shot-noise suppression at optical-frequencies in a drifting charged-particle-beam and the corresponding process of particles self-ordering are analyzed in a one-dimensional 1D model and verified by three-dimensional numerical simulations. The analysis confirms the prediction of a 1D single mode Langmuir plasma wave model of longitudinal plasma oscillation in the be...

Proposal for an x-ray free electron laser oscillator with intermediate energy electron beam.

Harmonic lasing of low-gain free electron laser oscillators has been experimentally demonstrated in the terahertz and infrared regions. Recently, the low-gain oscillator has been reconsidered as a promising candidate for hard x-ray free electron lasers, through the use of high reflectivity, high-resolution x-ray crystals. In this Letter, it is proposed to utilize a crystal-based cavity resonant...

Spatial holeburning effects in the amplified spontaneous emission spectra of the non-lasing supermode in semiconductor laser arrays

The amplified spontaneous emission spectrum of the light field in the nonlasing supermode of two coupled semiconductor lasers is analyzed using linearized Langevin equations. It is shown that the interference between the laser mode and the fluctuating light field in the non-lasing mode causes spatial holeburning. This effect introduces a phase sensitive coupling between the laser field and the ...
